N5Japanese Grammar

It is ~ (polite present tense for adjectives)

Formation:い-adj + です | な-adj + です

Polite Present Adjectives

Add です after an adjective and you've got the polite present form. い-adjectives and な-adjectives work slightly differently. For a full walkthrough of adjective basics, see our lesson on Japanese adjectives.

い-Adjectives

Keep the adjective as-is and add です:

Dictionary Form Polite Present
高(たか)い 高(たか)いです
大(おお)きい 大(おお)きいです
おいしい おいしいです
寒(さむ)い 寒(さむ)いです

The いい exception: いいです (not よいです in everyday speech, though よいです is grammatically correct and sometimes used in formal writing).

な-Adjectives

Remove だ from the plain form and add です:

Plain Form Polite Present
好(す)きだ 好(す)きです
静(しず)かだ 静(しず)かです
元気(げんき)だ 元気(げんき)です
きれいだ きれいです
