What なる Does
なる means "to become." It describes a change that happens — as opposed to する, where somebody makes it happen.
- 安くなる — it becomes cheaper (the price drops)
- 安くする — make it cheaper (you drop the price)
That contrast is the heart of this pattern.
Three Ways to Attach It
| Word type | Connector | Example |
|---|---|---|
| い-adjective | drop い, add く | 大きい → 大きくなる |
| な-adjective | add に | 静か → 静かになる |
| Noun | add に | 医者 → 医者になる |
The adverb forms you already know are doing the work here — く and に are the same connectors.
Conjugation
| Plain | Polite | |
|---|---|---|
| Non-past | なる | なります |
| Negative | ならない | なりません |
| Past | なった | なりました |
| Past negative | ならなかった | なりませんでした |
With Verbs: ようになる
To say you came to be able to do something, use the dictionary form + ようになる:
- 日本語が話せるようになりました。(I've become able to speak Japanese.)
This is an N4 pattern, but it grows straight out of なる and is worth recognising early.
いい Is Irregular
いい becomes よくなる, not ×いくなる:
- 天気がよくなりました。(The weather has improved.)
A Very Common Use: Age and Time
- 二十歳になりました。(I turned twenty.)
- もう遅くなりましたね。(It's got late, hasn't it.)
- 春になると桜が咲きます。(When spring comes, the cherry blossoms bloom.)
